Refractive Procedures

The goal of any refractive procedure is to reduce the dependence one has on glasses or constant contact lens. Originally, modern refractive correction began with ortho-keratolology. This technique of temporarily molding the cornea with rigid shaping contact lenses rarely provided the long term precise vision patients desire. After approval by the United States FDA in October 1995, Excimer Laser Refractive Surgery has superceded RK as the procedure of choice. The first procedure approved was Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK). PRK continues to be an excellent choice for the treatment of low to moderate myopia and has been widely used around the world in hundreds of thousands of cases with well-documented vision satisfaction and long-term stability. As technology advanced, the preferred refractive procedure for most cases has become LASIK (Laser In-situ Keratomileusis). LASIK enjoys widespread popularity among surgeons and patients alike because of its ability to restore vision promptly and comfortably.
